Lucy was selected by Queen Mary to participate in the Summer in China programme – teaching conversational English to Chinese students in Nanchang.
She was also given the opportunity to learn Mandarin. During her time in China Lucy found that she had to communicate in a variety of ways. She was a friend to the students she taught, she was an ambassador for Queen Mary and the UK and she had to operate in a professional context when meeting important people in Nanchang.
Spending a summer in China was a real culture shock but taught Lucy the importance of being open to change.
